7/8 Spelling Bee

Check out the mini-movie!

The Spelling Bee Movie Kickoff will take place on Friday in the library during period 5 and 6. We will view Akeelah and the Bee! Bring your own popcorn!

The School-Wide Gr. 7/8 Written Spelling Bee will take place during period 4 on January 18,19, and 20th. The winners of the written bee will move on to the Library Verbal Bee on Tuesday, January 25th. Practice your spelling using the Speller Kit and the Spell It! Guide @ www.canspell.com.

Grade 8 Read-a-thon!

Thank You to the 81 students in Gr. 8 who participated in the Read-a-thon on November 19th.  Together you raised $1663.00 for new library resources!  Please drop by the library to make your wish list of books known to staff!  Our Special Guest was author Denise Chong who walked us through the experience of writing and publishing her book, Egg on Mao.  Check it out @ your library!

Gr. 7 Read-a-thon

Congratulations to all 32 participants!  The library raised $ 683.27 for new library resources!  Katherine Grier was our guest story teller and she kept everyone enthralled with tales of the underworld, the supernatural and just plain creepy!  See if you can re-tell any of the tales she told us that day! Special Thanks to student, Mark Penner who introduced and thanked our guest speaker with panache!  Thank You to our school community of parents, teachers, students etc. who support this annual literacy initiative and fundraiser!

High School Read-a-thon A Huge Success!!!

Today 106 High School students celebrated reading and literacy in the library for the whole day!  This is a record breaking number of high school read-a-thon participants.  These students raised $2220.00 for new library resources.  Drummer, Derek DeBeer was our special guest entertainer from MASC.  See the photographs on the sidebar of students drumming with Derek.

Thank You to all the students, parents and staff who supported this fundraiser and literacy initiative!

Don't plan your research unit without this resource!

The 2010 Guide for Secondary Students produced by TDSB is hot off the press and available for you to use!!! We have 9 copies to circulate and 1 reference copy at the circ. desk.

We also have an electronic copy you may download onto your laptop. An excellent resource for teachers and students to use for planning Research projects...including loads and loads of excellent checklists for every stage of the Research process, notemaking handouts, thesis development guidelines...including handy RUBRICS etc.

It is updated with ideas for Multimedia formats for presenting data: wikis, blogs, web pages, storyboards, powerpoint presentations etc. Also it has sources for copyright-free images for research.

Word Nerd Author Visit with Susin Neilsen

St. Joseph Library will be hosting the Red Maple Award Nominated Author, Susin Neilsen on Sept. 28th.  Susin will talk about Word Nerd, her young adult novel about a boy who finds friendship and solace in the game of Scrabble!  All book club members are invited to attend!  Stay Tuned for more details.

Education Week Library Bookfest

Thank you to all students, staff and parents who supported this library fundraiser by donating and purchasing used books.

We raised approximately $350.00 for library resources. We also recycled approximately 500 pre-loved books.

We accept donations for the Bookfest year round!

Ms. Murray is back from maternity leave! Thank You for the warm welcome!

My mission is to re-vitalize the Library Blog and make it more useful and interactive for students and staff!

My vision is to create a place for students to:

* blog about the books they are reading
* create wiki assignments
* post photostory interpretations of their learning
* post podcasts of their oral readings, debates or essays

Essentially, to bring technology into the 21st Century classroom.
